Chapter 14, The Primal

Back in Elmore, the Rangers and Team Omega slowly make their way to the shopping center.  The Wattersons are still being protected within the circle that is formed.  The Inorbit Soldiers persist in their attack while the Power Rangers continue to fend them off.

Two ground soldiers stealthily approach the group, ready to attack.  Dan puts his elemental power of Metal to work.  He reaches out to a nearby car.  The hood flies off and soars toward the soldiers.  Unable to move quickly enough to escape, the metal hood wraps itself tightly around them.  They fall to the ground and roll away in their metal capsule.

Dan enjoys his victory as he says, “That’s one way to hit the road!”  The Rangers and Team Omega groan at the cheesy pun.  “Yeah, I agree.  That joke needs a little work,” he admits.

Another troop of Inorbit Soldiers arrives to give battle to the team.  Dustin, powering up his Evolution Blaster, hoses down the enemy.  “Hey, what are you trying to do, drown us?!” they exclaim.

“Nope,” responds Ash, “we’re trying to fry you!”  He pulls out his Evolution Saber and thrusts it into the water causing the electricity to flow through it and strike the soldiers.

Savior watches his men at work aboard his aircraft.  “Status report!” he commands.

“Sir, the troops are giving it their all but they can’t even leave a mark.”

“And why pray tell, is that?” asks Savior.

“The Power Rangers and Team Omega have formed a circle around the Wattersons,” answers the crew member.  “The Green Ranger is blowing away the troops running towards him and the rest are repelling the soldiers from every side, they can’t even get near them, sir.”

“Oh, can you not see?  The answer is so simple,” comments Savior.  “Have one of the soldiers deploy a grenade at their feet.  The blast wave will scatter them, if not destroy them.  And it better not, I need Nicole Watterson alive.”

Tracey can see the shopping center up ahead.  “Guys, we’re almost there!  Just a little further!” he says.

As the group slowly proceeds, Anais wonders what the plan is once she and everyone else reach their destination.  Her thoughts are interrupted when she sees something roll into the protected circle.  It’s round and silver, with a flashing red light.  “Grenade!” she shouts with a gasp.  Everyone looks, but it is too late.  The grenade blows up, and everyone gets scattered in the blast wave.

“Ouch.  Is everyone alright?” asks Dan.

“I believe so, Gold,” replies Dustin.  “But who failed to point out the possibility of grenades being thrown at our feet?”

“I have my suspicions,” comments Michael.

“Don’t start, Black!” commands Dan.

“That goes double for you, Rosk,” says Cayde.

“…I didn’t say anything,” replies Rosk.

The soldiers from behind the group come charging.  “Stop right there, shorties!” yells Michael as he slams his fist into the ground, causing a stone wall to pop out, blocking the soldiers’ path.  “That should hold them.”

“Yes, but not for long,” remarks Slammer.  “We have to keep moving.”

“Don’t worry,” says Gumball.  “The shopping center is right over…DAH!!!!”  Everyone can see Inorbit Soldiers everywhere.  “They’ve covered every inch of the shopping center!”

“Not all of it!” calls out Anais as she points to a convenient store, free of enemy soldiers.”

“What?  Why would they not take control of a convenient store?” asks Gumball.

“Maybe it wasn’t convenient enough for them,” comments Darwin with a dimpled smile.

“Whatever the reason, it will have to do,” says Dan.  “Blue, Yellow, Black, escort The Wattersons and the sheriff safely to the convenience store!  Everyone else spread out and have at the enemy!”  With that, The Rangers carry out their assignments.

“Sync, what are our chances of contacting headquarters?” asks Cayde.

“Still no good, sir,” answers Sync, “Savior’s field is covering every part of Elmore.  As long as it’s up, we won’t be making any contact.”

“Then we shall make our stand,” says Cayde, “we must keep on fighting until we get the opportunity to disable the field, otherwise none of us are getting out of this alive.  Attack!”  Cayde and his team engage the enemy without hesitation.

The three Rangers and the Wattersons head out.  “We just have to get inside that store and we can make a stand,” shouts Ash, as he runs for safety.

“Uh guys, we got company!” shouts Dustin as he points to Inorbit soldiers heading right for them.

“I got this,” says Michael.  He pulls out his Evolution Blaster.  “First, we blind them with Mud Shot.”  He pulls the trigger and mud projectiles slam the Inorbit Soldiers’ in the face.  Michael converts his weapon into Saber mode and touches the Megastone to power up his next attack.  “Next, we give them a big drop with Fissure!”  He strikes the ground with his Saber, causing the very earth right beneath the soldiers’ feet to crack and split open.  The enemies lose their footing and plummet into the abyss, which immediately closes, trapping them inside.

“Nicely done, now let's keep moving,” says Dustin.  The group makes it safely to the convenience store.  They find it ransacked from the attacking Inorbit Soldiers.  “Whoa.  Larry’s not gonna be happy about this.”

“Hey guys, look,” says Ash, pointing towards the checkout stand.  Everyone sees a yellow cat with red eyes and a pink shirt that says “2 cool 4 U” just standing in front of the checkout stand, sipping a smoothie.

“Oh no, not you again,” says the doughnut cop.

“You know this kid?” asks Michael.

“The entire city knows who he is,” comments Anais.

“Kid, you better not be causing trouble here,” the doughnut cop says to the yellow cat.

“No, no trouble at all,” replies the yellow cat.  “No one's here to run the register, so I decided to help myself to a smoothie and about twenty candy bars.”

“What?!  You’re shoplifting?!” exclaims the doughnut cop.

“No,” answers the yellow cat.  With a pop, he pulls his right arm off and shakes it over the checkout counter.  When the right amount of change is deposited, he reattaches his arm.  “I’ve been leaving money behind for everything I eat.”

As he tries not to stare at the yellow cat’s arm, the very disturbed doughnut cop says, “Ehhhhh…ok then, as long as you're paying.”

Confused by what he has just witnessed, Michael decides to seek answers from Gumball.  “Hey, Gumball, who’s the kid with the tomato red eyes?”

“That’s Lance,” answers Gumball, “but everybody refers to him by his nickname, Killer.”

“Killer?  Oh yeah!” says Dustin.  “Red’s told us about him before.  He’s this mutant cat who can shapeshift.  He gets into a lot of trouble which Red always has to fix, he has an obsession with tacos, and there’s something about him melting whenever he gets wet.”

“Yup, that’s him alright,” comments Darwin.

“But why exactly is his nickname Killer?” asks Ash.

“Some say it’s because he earned it,” answers Anais.

“…Earned it?” asks Dustin hesitantly.

“Yup,” answers Anais.

“Umm, instead of asking how he earned it, I’m gonna ask him something,” says Dustin, as he walks to the yellow cat.  “Excuse me, Lance is it?”

“Call me Killer,” answers the cat.

“Oh come on,” whispers Dustin.  “Killer, you wouldn’t know if Larry Needlemeyer works here, would you?”

“He works everywhere in this town, Blue Ranger,” answers Anais.

“I know that Anais,” replies Dustin, “now please reframe from interrupting me again.”

“You talking about the rock guy with the big head and the skinny body?” asks Killer.  “He was here earlier.  But when these masked people showed up, he panicked, ran around the convenience store screaming, knocking everything over in the process and ran out the door screaming ‘THE WATTERSONS WILL PAY FOR THIS!!!!!’.  He didn’t even say hello to me.”

“Whoa, whoa, back up,” says the doughnut cop.  “You mean to tell us that Larry is the one who made this mess?”

“Never seen someone act so crazy in my life, except maybe myself,” answers Killer as he sips his smoothie.  “Oh, empty.”  Killer takes a bite out of his empty cup.

“What the?!” exclaims Dustin.  “Killer did you just…never mind, forget it.  Well, it sounds like Larry’s upset about Red terminating his restraining order.”

“Should we be concerned about that?” asks Ash.  “It sounds to me like Larry might do something drastic.”

“Nah,” answers Michael, “he’s just a store clerk…and a bunch of other things.  He may be made a rock, but he’s a wuss, he couldn’t lift an ax if his life depended on it.”

The battle intensifies.  “Hey guys!” calls Dan.  “If you’ve got the Wattersons safely to the convenience store,” he grabs an incoming soldier and slams ‘em to the ground, “we could really use some help out here!”

“Right.  Sheriff, stay here and look after the Wattersons,” orders Ash.

“You got it,” replies the doughnut cop.

Ash, Dustin, and Michael rush outside with their Evolution Blasters ready.   “Hey guys,” calls out Michael, “just a heads up!  The Yellow mutant cat that Red told us about is in the convenience store with the Wattersons and Officer Pastry!”  Michael elbows a soldier in the face.  “So now we’ve got seven Tawogians to protect!”

“Understood, Black!” says Dan.

“Richard, keep an eye on the kids,” says Nicole.  “I’m gonna provide the Rangers some cover.”

“But honey, didn’t they say to stay here?” asks Richard.

“Yes, but I still have the weapon the Yellow Ranger lent me, I can cover them from the window.”  Nicole breaks a window with one fist and fires off the Attack Blaster.  “Take this, you masked freaks!”

Tracey gets kicked to the side of the convenience store by an Inorbit solder.  As the enemy prepares to fire his weapon, Tracey twirls his hand in a circle, creating a dust devil.  He then uses it to trap the soldier and send him away.  As Tracey stands back up, he feels something tapping his helmet.  He looks up and sees Killer looking down at him.

“Hey, Green Ranger,” says Killer as he reaches behind his left ear.  After a few seconds of searching, he pulls out a taco.  “You want one?  I’ve got plenty behind my ear.”

Disturbed by what he just witnessed, Tracey thinks of an excuse to reject Killer’s offer.  “Uhh, I’m kinda busy here,” he says.  “In case you haven’t noticed, we’re trying to stop these invaders from destroying the city.  Thanks for the offer though, I guess.”  He charges back into battle with his Evolution Blaster ready.

“Ok then,” calls out Killer as he takes a bite out of the taco.  “But if you change your mind, I’m willing to share.”

Back in the human world, Adam and Beki return to Pokéball Center, both in their Ranger uniforms.

“Oh good, you’re back,” says Prof. Oak.

“What’s going on, Professor?” asks Beki.

“Yeah, why do you need us back, and in our suits, too?” asks Adam.

“It’s not I that needs you suited up, it’s Devin,” answers Professor Oak.

“Devin?  What do you mean?” asks Adam.

“He knows the truth behind the Wattersons’ secret, now he plans to help them,” Prof. Oak remarks.

“Really?  That’s great!” exclaims Beki.  “Wait, how can he know the truth if the others aren’t back to tell him?”

“It’s a long story and we don’t have time to explain now,” answers Devin as he walks in, suited up.  “The others need our help, and so does Tawog.  It’s time to put a stop to the invasion.  Hoopa, open a portal to Elmore, we’re going in.”

“You got it boss!” salutes Hoopa.  The ring around his waist detaches, floats away, expands and creates a mystical gateway.  “Your package awaits.”

“Hoopa, the word you’re looking for is ‘passage’,” corrects Devin.

"Right, your package.”

“Oh brother.  Adam, Beki, let’s go!”  The three Rangers charge through the portal and safely emerge on the other side.  “Alright, lets…wait, what?  This isn’t Elmore, what’s going on?”

“Where did Hoopa take us?” asks Beki.

“I’d say we’re at the exact same spot where we faked our exile,” answers Adam.

“What makes you say that?” Asks Beki.

“Look,” says Adam as he points at the remains of a blown up machine.  “The fake portal wreckage is still there.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that,” comments Beki.  “Guess we’ve been too busy to even remember to clean it up.”

Devin contacts Pokéball Center with his communicator.  “Hoopa, come in.  Were you daydreaming again?”

“No, of course not,” answers Hoopa.  “Why do you ask?”

“The portal you opened took us to the same spot where we faked our exile.”

“Exile?”

“This was before you became one of us, Hoopa.”

“I don’t understand, the portal I opened should’ve taken you directly to Elmore.”

“I know what’s wrong,” says Prof. Oak.  “Devin, I forgot to tell you that Savior’s aircraft is emitting a disruptor field around Elmore, preventing any dimensional portals from opening as well as jamming your Pokémon Summoners.”

“Well that’s just great,” comments Beki.  “Elmore is fifteen miles from here.  Without the means of summoning our Pokémon, the only way to get there is on foot.  By the time we show up, it could be too late.”

“Not to worry, sister, I’ve planned ahead,” says Devin as he pulls out three Pokéballs, each with a purple top, two big magenta dots and an M right above the button.

“Master Balls?” asks Adam.

“That’s right,” answers Devin.  He tosses one of the Master Balls to Beki and one to Adam while keeping a hold of the third.  Adam and Beki look at their Master Balls confused.  “Well, are you gonna throw them or just stare at them?”

Acting on Devin’s suggestion, Adam pushes the button on the Master Ball, causing it to enlarge.  As he throws it, white energy comes out and form a shape.  When the energy stops glowing, Adam sees a large green Asian dragon slithering through the air with four horns pointing backward from the four corners of its head, and two short three-clawed arms.  Yellow patterns embellish its long body.  The dragon lets out a roar as he emerges from the Master Ball.

“Rayquaza?” says Adam, surprised to see one of his faithful Pokémon comrades.

After seeing Rayquaza appear, Beki wonders who’s in the Master Ball she’s holding.  She enlarges the ball and throws it.  A big blue Pokémon resembling a killer whale finds its freedom.  The oversized ally extends two huge fins, each with four fingers and red markings similar to the symbol for alpha.  Behind its two dorsal fins, its split tail waves majestically.  This creature also lets out a cry.

“Kyogre?” says Beki as she perplexedly gazes at her beautiful water type Pokémon.  “Wait, if these two are here, then that means…”

With the contents of Adam and Beki’s Master Balls released, Devin proceeds to do the same with his.  He throws it and out comes a huge red dinosaur-like creature with sharp teeth and claws, large hands and feet and a fierce head covered with four triangle-shaped ridges.  White spikes on the left and right side of its body, going from its face to the four parallel upward curving blades on its tail, along with black markings running down its back and limbs, make for an unconquerable opponent.  The fearsome Pokémon releases a big loud roar.

“…Groudon is here too, of course,” Beki finishes.  “Wait a minute, if they're all here, that means you somehow got access to Adam’s and my Pokémon storage unit in order to get Kyogre and Rayquaza.  How did you do that?”

“Like I’d tell you,” answers Devin as he approaches the three legendary Pokémon.  “Super Ancient Pokémon, hear me now.  Once again, Tawog is in grave danger.  Elmore is under attack by invaders from another dimension, and we need your help to fend them off.  We all know that you three don’t get along very well.  Groudon and Kyogre, the story has been told for generations in the human world about your constant battles with each other over being the supreme side of nature.  Your primal powers caused great catastrophes when you two fought.  It wasn’t until Rayquaza descended from the ozone and used his power of Mega Evolution to force the two of you to stop.  You three have proven that by fighting each other, your ancient powers are enough to destroy an entire world.  But today, you will prove to us, and the Tawogians that by working together, your ancient powers can also save a world.  So I ask, in Tawog’s desperate time of need, please put your differences aside and help us win this battle.”

The three legendary Pokémon look at each other, wondering if they can work together after thousands of years fighting each other.  Finally, they all nod and Rayquaza speaks with soft growls.

“What did he say, Adam?” asks Devin.

“Rayquaza said that they are willing to try and working together,” answers Adam.  “But if we want them to fight using their ancient powers, we must first power up ourselves.”

“Exactly what I was planning to do,” says Devin, pleased with the answer.

“Oh great, here we go once again with the Battlizer Ball,” comments Beki, sarcastically.

“Mega Ring Morpher!” commands Devin.   His golden Mega Ring Morpher appears on his left wrist with a red Megastone in the center.  “Volcano Megastone, energize!”  He touches the stone to initiate the morphing sequence.  “Beyond evolution, Mega Evolve!”  Devin goes through the morphing process, granting him the golden armor, the big Megastone design on the breastplate, and his duel mode Evolution weapon.  Devin has morphed into his Evolution mode.

“Oh, I guess not,” comments Beki, surprised.  “Wait, Devin, Adam can make Rayquasa Mega Evolve anytime he wants, but Groudon and Kyogre can’t change into their Primal forms without-”

“The Red and Blue Orbs?” asks Devin, finishing Beki’s sentence.  He pulls out two orbs with crystal-like faceted textures.  One is red and round with a point on the top, bearing a yellow Omega symbol.  The other is blue, completely round, embellished with a lighter blue Alpha symbol.  “That’s the whole reason I stepped into the artifact storage before you two got back.”  Devin tosses the Blue Orb to his sister.  “Honestly, Beki, you should know better than to think I’d forget something as important as that.”

“Oh brother,” says Beki quietly.  She remembers a problem.  “Devin wait!”

“What is it?”

“If you transform Groudon into Primal Groudon, his Desolate Land ability will cause scorching sunlight, setting Tawog on fire!”

“Relax, Beki.  When you make Kyogre take on his Primal form, Desolate Land will be canceled out by Primal Kyogre’s Primordial Sea ability.”

“But that will cause heavy rain to flood Tawog!”

“Which is why when Rayquaza Mega Evolves, Primordial Sea will be Canceled out by Mega Rayquaza’s Delta Stream ability.”

“But that will protect all flying type Pokémon within range!”  Devin doesn’t give a response.  “Oh, right, that won’t cause any harm.”

“Will you let me do my thing now?”

“Yeah, sure go ahead.”

“Thank you.”  Devin looks up at Groudon.  “You ready, buddy?”  Groudon replies with a nod and a soft growl.  “Alright then, let's do it.”  Devin holds the Red Orb over his head.  “Groudon, embrace the power of Primal Reversion!”

The Red Orb glows brightly, its power surges through Groudon’s body.  Groudon grows bigger and bigger.  His skin cracks and bursts off.  His teeth, spikes, and underbelly darken until completely black.  The curved blades on his tail spread apart, the markings in his skin fill with lava-like energy.  Glowing Omega symbols form on his arms.  He roars even more deafeningly now that he is Primal Groudon.    As Devin approaches, he lowers his head.

“We shall defeat this enemy together, old friend,” says Devin.  He climbs onto Primal Groudon’s head, standing behind the head armor, allowing him to stand up straight.  Devin pulls out his Evolution saber as he speaks.  “Adam, Beki, we’re going to prove to the Inorbit Empire that there has always been might.  Even in ancient times!”

“Oh please,” says Beki.  “I swear, this is just another one of Devin’s attempts to make things look cool.  I guess he thinks ‘the more awesome the battle, the better the experience’ or something like that.  I mean do you even know the number of times-”

“Beki,” interrupts Adam.

“Yeah?”

“Zip it and power up.”

“Ok, ok, geez.”

“Mega Ring Morpher!” commands Adam and Beki, causing their golden Mega Ring Morphers to appear on their left wrists with a white Megastone on Adam’s and a violet one on Beki’s.

“Synthesis Megastone, energize!” says Beki as she touches her Megastone.

“Knowledge Megastone, energize!” says Adam as he touches his Megastone.

“Beyond evolution, Mega Evolve!” Adam and Beki shout.  Like Devin, the two Ranger morph into Evolution mode, providing them with the gold armor and dual mode weapons.

“Beki, the sunlight is getting intense!” says Devin, desperately.  “Hurry and primal up Kyogre!”

“Ok, I’m on it,” says Beki as she rushes to Kyogre and holds the Blue Orb over her head.  “Do I really have to say it?”

“Yes, Beki,” answers Devin.  “Now hurry up!”

“Oh alright,” says Beki.  “Kyogre, embrace the power of Primal Reversion!”  The Blue Orb glows brightly.  Like Groudon, Kyogre becomes larger, resulting in his skin breaking off.  His tail fins lengthen with each strip shining brightly.  The alpha symbols on his front fins radiate a gold light.  His underbelly becomes transparent, revealing glowing energy from within.  His forehead bears the mighty alpha symbol.  He is now Primal Kyogre.  He lets out a louder cry and touches one of his fins to the ground, allowing Beki to climb aboard.

Once Beki gets on Primal Kyogre’s back, she notices rain clouds coming in.  “Adam, the heavy rain is coming!” she calls.  “Make Rayquaza Mega Evolve so he can prevent the rain with Delta Stream!”

“You got it!” responds Adam.  “Rayquaza, grant my wish!”  He touches his Megastone attached to his Mega Ring Morpher.  “Beyond evolution, Mega Evolve!”

“Did he seriously just say ‘grant my wish’?” asks Beki.

“Yes, yes he did,” answers Devin.

Rayquaza glows brightly as he goes through a physical transformation.  His upper horns extend and give off long antennae-like energy.  His lower horns curve forward into blades, releasing long streams of energy, each bearing double circles, and small green arrowheads.  His underside turns black with gleaming red spots going down the sides of his long body.  His tail flexes two yellow ribbon-like tendrils.  He shows off a menacing pattern to his face and an upside down delta symbol on his forehead.  With Rayquaza Mega Evolved into Mega Rayquaza, he lets out a grand roar and then lowers his head so Adam can climb aboard.  The three Rangers notice Mega Rayquaza’s Delta Stream ability, making the storm clouds disappear.

“Everyone, the battle will be won!” says Devin as the three powered up Pokémon let out their cries.  “Let’s ride!”
