Chapter 19, The Worm

After climbing over a 200 stair, the Sniper Assault Team makes it to the thirteenth floor.

“Aw man,” pants Gumball, “why do we have to be on the thirteenth floor anyway?”

“Because I can get a better shot at the shrink ray from here,” answers Beki.  “Hey, where’s Toby?”

“I’m over here,” says Toby from the middle of the room.

“What the?!  How did you get here before the rest of us?!” asks Beki, surprised.

“I casted a spell that brought me straight here,” says Toby.  “But geez, you guys sure took your time.”

“What?!  Why didn’t you tell us you could do that?!” demands Beki.  “I could’ve destroyed the shrink ray by now!”

“Because you guys were depriving me of my magic,” says Toby.

“Ugh!  Well never mind that now,” says Beki.  “We need to hide so the Kenneth Ship doesn’t see us.”

“Question,” says Gumball, “how are we supposed to hide Emboar?  He doesn’t look so easy to hide.”

“Em?  Emboar emboar emboar emboar?!” says Emboar.

“No, no, no,” says Gumball, “I’m not calling you fat if that’s what you’re thinking.”

Outside, Charizard roars, which Celebi immediately translates for Beki.  “Oh no!” says Beki.  “We don’t have time to figure that out, the ship’s almost here!  Everyone under the office desks!”

Everyone runs in all directions to hide, Gumball and Penny with Nicole, Beki with Toby, and each of the fire type alone.  But as for Emboar, seeing that he can’t fit under a desk, he panics.  Then he spots a meeting room door just across from him.  He rushes in and holds the door shut.

The Kenneth Ship, with a Kenneth Soldier standing on the outside wing, flies up to the building.  The Soldier jumps right through the window.  Armed with a blaster, the Soldier slowly walks forward, growling as it examines the room.  The Sniper Assault Team stays as quiet as they possibly can in their hiding places.

Beki thinks that they need to get rid of the Soldier without being seen.  Then it strikes her.  She makes a strange fruit appear in her hand.  She holds it to Toby, who notices that, for some reason, the stem on the fruit is actually a fuse.  “Light it,” Beki whispers very softly.  Recognizing what Beki is up to, he touches the fuse with his Magi Staff.  Then Beki rolls the lit fruit away.

The Kenneth Soldier notices the rolling fruit heading its way.  Curious, it picks the fruit up and looks at it.  Noticing the sparkling fuse, it looks even closer.  Suddenly, the fruit blows up in the Soldier’s face.

Startled, it loses its balance and walks backwards towards the broken window.  Before the Soldier knows it, it stumbles out the window in a free fall.

On the ground, the Kenneth Commander walks by the building searching for any Ranger or Pokémon he can bring pain to.  From above him, he hears the scream of a Kenneth Soldier and sees it falling face up.  When it hits the ground, it splatters everywhere, even on the Commander.  After witnessing this unfortunate event, the Commander looks up at the building, thinking that something’s going on in there.  All the while, he is absorbing the splattered gunk from the Kenneth Soldier into his body.

Beki peeks out from under the table and sees no sign of the Kenneth Soldier.  “All clear everyone,” she says, “now let’s finish this.”

Nicole knocks on the meeting room door.  “You can come out now, Emboar,” she says, “the coast is clear.”

Emboar opens the door a crack and peeks, just in case the voice he hears was an imposter.  He opens it all the way once he sees it is really Nicole.  He speaks to her nervously.

“Relax,” says Nicole, “No one thought you were hiding like a coward if that’s what you’re thinking.”

Beki runs up to the broken window where she can see Chanax Incorporated and the shrink ray.  “Finally, this is where it all ends,” says Beki.  “Now let’s get this over with.  Nature Daggers combine!”  She pulls out her Daggers and links the bottom ends together, forming her Nature Bow.  “Explosion Arrow!”  With that, the explosive energy-filled arrow appears in her hand.  She sets it in her bow, aims and pulls.  “Steady now, I’ve only got one shot to pull this off.”  Suddenly her aim and balance get thrown off as the building begins to shake.  “What the, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know, earthquake?!” says Gumball as he keeps hold onto a desk.

“Oh no!” says Penny as she looks out a window.  “Beki, we’ve got a problem, the Ken-worm is heading this way!”

“What?!” shouts Beki.  “I thought the Rigies were keeping it busy!”

“Hey Beki,” says Toby, “isn’t that the Kenneth Commander down there?”

Beki looks down and finds that Toby’s right, the Kenneth commander is standing in front of their building.  “Oh no,” she says, “he must have called for it.  But how did he know we’re in here?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” asks Toby.  “He saw the Kenneth Soldier you got rid of fall out the window.  Which means you blew our cover.  And you threatened me if I blew it.  Cruel irony right here.”

“Oh shut up!” exclaims Beki.  “Everyone, we need to get out of here, now!”

“What?!” says Gumball.  “But we ran a long way to get here to destroy the shrink ray, why are you telling us to retreat?”

“Our position has been compromised,” says Beki, “now the Kenneth Commander has summoned the Ken-worm to deal with us!  We need to get out of here before that worm attacks!”

The worm approaches the Commander as he shouts an order.  Then, without hesitation, the many heads of the Ken-worm bites away at the lower section of the building. It attacks as if it is going to fell a tree.  The building shakes and starts to lean as the structure is compromised.  The Assault Team slides across the floor as the attack continues and the building is no longer level.  “What’s going on!” shouts Gumball.

“The building is tipping over!” Penny screams.

The broken building falls and hits a neighboring structure and crushes it.  It then collapses on itself and falls completely sideways, shattering all the windows.  The Team loses its balance and slides across the floor closer and closer to the broken windows.

“Everybody, heads up!” commands Beki.  “We are sliding too close to all that broken glass.”  As the team reaches out for anything to brace them, Penny is pushed ever closer to danger.  As the building makes one final jerk, Gumball jumps and catches Penny’s hand just as she flies out the window and tries to pull her to safety.

“Penny, hold on!” shouts Gumball.

“Gumball, I’m slipping!” shouts Penny.  Her hand slowly slides out of Gumball’s grip, she starts to fall.

“PENNY, NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!” Gumball cries out.  Suddenly, Charizard swoops under Penny and catches her.  He then flies her to a nearby balcony of a fire escape to safety.  “Oh thank you, Charizard, thank you so much for saving Penny!”

While still clinging on to the partially collapsed building, Beki pulls out one of her Nature Daggers.  The blade turns into a vine whip.  With it, she lassos the railing of the balcony below.  She let’s go of the building and swings down, aiming for the bottom of the balcony.  As her feet tough the wall she pushes off, doing a flip and landing right onto her intended target.  She then pulls out her other Dagger which also turns into a vine whip.  With both of them, she lassos the toppled building.  “Everyone, use my vines to slide down here!” she calls out to the team still holding on to the building.

“I don’t know,” says Gumball, “it’s a long way down.  What if we lose our grip?”  Gumball watches as the Alpha Fire Team uses the vines as zip lines and slides right down.  “Of course they have the guts to slide right down without even a second thought; they’re trained for things like this.  What should we do, Mom?”  He watches as his mother grabs onto one of the vines.  “Mom?”  Nicole slides right down to the balcony.  “What the?!  Mom, you just left me here!”

“Gumball,” Nicole calls out, “You have to slide down here on the vine!”

“What?!” yells Gumball.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart, I will catch you!” says Nicole with her arms out.

“I’m too scared, Mom!” cries Gumball.  “I could lose my grip and splat on the sidewalk like a moth on a windshield!”

“You can do it, Gummypuss!” Nicole calls out.  “I believe in you!”

“Gummypuss?” says Beki.

Terrified, Gumball looks at the narrow vine and knows it’s not safe.  But then he looks at his mom and knows that there’s no way she will let him fall.  With a trembling hand, he reaches and clutches onto the vine.  He squeezes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and lets go of the building.  With an ear-shattering scream, he slides down and lands right in Nicole’s arms.  “That’s the scariest thing I’ve ever gone through!” he cries.

“It’s ok, honey,” says Nicole, comforting her weeping child.  “I knew you had the courage in you.  I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Mom,” says Gumball, still in tears.

“Thank goodness you’re safe,” says Beki.  “Ok Toby, slide on down.”  No answer.  “Toby?  Toby!”

“No need to yell, I’m right here,” says Toby, from behind Beki.

“What the?!” yells Beki.  “How did…no wait, magic, right?”

“Yup,” says Toby.

Beki reels the vines in, turning them back into dagger blades.  “Ok everyone,” she says, “let’s get out of here before-” Just then, the Ken-Worm coils itself through and around the half collapsed building, poking its many heads out the bottom.  “Oh, too late.”

Charizard flies straight for one of the heads, but it knocks him down on the balcony where the others stand.

“Looks like you can’t attack it straight on,” says Penny.

The Ken-Worm roars at the Sniper Assault Team with all of its heads.  Using their Flamethrower Pokémon attack, Charizard, Typhlosion, Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar, and Delphox engage the heads.  Toby shoots fire magic from his Magi Staff and Beki fires arrows.  The worm is fazed by any attack thrown at it.

“Nothings working!” yells Gumball.  “Anybody else got something to throw at that thing?”

“How about insults?” asks Toby.

“Oh sure, that will really help,” says Beki.  Celebi frantically waves her arms to get Beki’s attention.  “What is it, Celebi?  I’m kinda busy here.”  Celebi points at something over to the left.  Beki looks carefully and sees something coming their way.  “Hey, it’s Devin, in his Battlizer mode!”

“What now?” says Toby.

“Devin and Victini are flying this way!” says Beki.

“So Devin got his Battlizer Ball back?” asks Gumball.  “Oh sweet!  Just what we needed!”

With his Gatling Flame Blasters locked and loaded, and Victini by his side, Devin flies towards the Ken-worm still deeply embedded in the fallen glass building.  “Hang tight, I’m coming!” he shouts to his comrades.  He cocks his guns and opens fire at the worm’s heads, which catches its attention.  When he gets to the other side, Devin turns around and keeps firing as he flies upward.  Once he gets to the proper altitude, Devin makes his Gatling Flame Blaster disappear for storage.  Then in his right hand, an orange energy sphere appears.  Devin launches it at the worm, and the sphere goes right into the beast’s slimy body.

The Rangers and Pokémon on the balcony continue to fend off the heads of the Ken-worm while Gumball, Nicole, and Penny try to keep their distance.

“Where did Devin go?” asks Penny.  “He fires at the worm, flies right by and just left us here?”

“Oh, no, Penny,” says Nicole, “Devin would never leave us behind.”  One of the worm’s heads moves towards Nicole from behind.

Gumball lets out a frightful gasp.  “Mom, look out!” he says.

Nicole turns around to see the worm about to strike.  She screams and flinches.  Nothing happens.  Nicole peeks and sees the head has stopped in front of her.  In fact, it completely stops all together as if it were paralyzed.  “Huh?” she says as she knocks on the worm’s lower jaw.  “What the?  It’s become solid.”

“What?” says Gumball.  Everyone looks at the rest of the Ken-worm and watches as it turns a lighter grayish brown.  They also notice that the worm stops moving as it changes color.  “What’s happening?”

“The worm,” says Toby, “It’s turning to stone!”

“Uh, no.  Close, but no,” says Beki.  “It’s drying up, but why?”  Typhlosion speaks and Celebi translates.  “Oh, well apparently, Devin must’ve used intense heat to strip the worm of all its moisture, dry.”

“Wow, you were right, Mrs. Watterson,” says Penny.  “But what now?”

Devin watches as the worm dries up completely.  “Alright,” he says, turning to Victini, “let’s do it.”  Victini salutes, climbs on Devin’s back and gets a firm grip on his armor.  Then, he uses his Victory Star power to give Devin intense energy.  Devin feels the energy throughout his body.  He summons his Fire Blade and channels the energy to it.  The energy fills the blade making Devin’s wrist shake as he feels the power grow.  Then, a big upside down energy V appears on the tip of the blade.  With his powered-up Fire Blade ready, he dives towards the worm.  The V shaped energy on the tip of the blade allows him to cut right through the first coil sticking out of the building.  Devin keeps cutting his way down, coil after coil.  Finally, he comes out the other side of the building and flies off.  The dried up worm, sliced in separate parts, falls to the ground and shatters into even smaller pieces.

The Sniper Assault Team cheers, the largest obstacle is finally out of the way.

“Yeah!  That’s the end of the Ken-worm!” says Gumball.

“Let’s hope so,” says Penny.

Devin and Victini fly near a building under construction.

“Good work, Victini,” says Devin as he lands on a girder that is sticking out, “now let’s get them out of there.”

“Tini,” Victini replied.

Near the collapsed glass building, the Kenneth commander looks upon the Ken-worm, his hunting comrade in broken pieces.  Angered, he looks at the unfinished building Devin’s standing on.  He shouts out threats against Devin in his indescribable tongue.  He points his left blaster hand towards the building, charges it up and fires.

Devin runs across the girder for takeoff.

“TINI!!!” shouts Victini, translated to “LOOK OUT!!!”

“Huh?” says Devin.  The Kenneth Commander’s blast hits him, sending him flying across the hollow building into some construction cables, which his arms and wings get caught in.  He struggles to break free, but the cables are so tangled around him, he can’t even focus on using his power of fire to melt through them.  “Ugh, great.”  He hangs there in disappointment when he hears familiar sounds coming from ground level.  He sees Regirock, Regice, and Registeel heading his way.  “Regis, get me down from here!”

Back at Chanax Incorporated, Kentyth has just received information as to what has happened.  “So, the Firerage Ranger is out of commission,” he says.  “That’s good, but he won’t stay that way, so let’s not waste the opportunity.  Kenneth Commander, bring me the boy’s mother.”

The Ken-Wom kinda reminds me of the worm monster from Gears of War 2.
